Oufielding Coaches BiosMany people are familiar with the success Coach Sue Enquist has had at UCLA. During her extraordinary tenure on the bruins coaching staff, UCLA has played in a record 18 championship games winning 10 titles -- including the 2003 and 2004 championships. (In 2005 and in 2002 they were runners-up). What many people do not know is that during her days playing outfield as a centerfielder for the Bruins from 1975-1978, Enquist had a then record career batting average of .401, while earning honors as UCLA's first softball All-American. She really knows how to play outfield and she wants to show you how too. The lesser known coach in this duo is Gina Vecchione. She is in her seventh season as a member of the Bruin coaching staff. Gina Vecchione works with the Bruins who play outfield and the hitters on the team. Vecchione's playing career at UCLA included All-Region selections in 1980, '81 and '82 where she was playing outfield for the Bruins. Vecchione earned second-team All-America honors. After the conclusion of her collegiate career, Vecchione played 12 seasons with the Raysbestos Brakettes of Stratford, Conn., winners of eight ASA titles and three World titles. Vecchione was named to the ASA All-America team seven times, and was the top hitter at the 1988 national tournament with a .444 average. Vecchione earned softball's top honor in 1997, when she became the first UCLA player inducted into the Amateur Softball Association's Hall of Fame. Former Bruin head coach Sharron Backus is the only other Bruin in the ASA Hall of Fame. She was also a member of the 1983 U.S. National Team for the 1983 Pan American Games.
